Lucasfilm Games Has New Star Wars Projects in Development – Here’s What We Know

EA has long been the developer of all video games released in the Star Wars franchise. For eight years, Electronic Arts exclusively distributed all the video games for the titular franchise, a run that would come to an end in 2021, when Lucasfilm Games announced the development of an upcoming game, to be developed by Ubisoft, ending the nearly decade-long run. As of now the developer has released one game under the Ubisoft banner and plans to release more games with different studios and in different genres. The game released was the long-anticipated Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, a complete overhaul of the previous Lego Star Wars games and the addition of playable missions from the Skywalker Saga. The game was released on April 5 and sold 3.2 million copies in the first two weeks after its release, surpassing all other previous Lego Star Wars games. Looking ahead, however, Lucasfilm Games not only has brand new games planned but remakes and sequels of previous titles as well.

One of the sequels in development includes Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. A sequel to the highly popular and second-best-selling Star Wars game of all time, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The game is under development at Respawn Entertainment, the studio responsible for the prequel, and it plans to continue where the previous game left off. The game is set to release sometime in 2023.

One of the more anticipated remakes includes the popular RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game is widely considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time and studio ASPYR plans to remake it “from the ground up.” Lead producer Ryan Treadwell said the remake however will maintain the “integrity of story and character from the original.” The release date for this project is unknown.

Alongside the these projects, both Respawn and Ubisoft Studios say they plan on releasing even bigger projects which include a first-person shooter and an open-world Star Wars game. Currently, Ubisoft has posted multiple job listings seeking young developers with experience creating action-adventure and RPG games. There are even more projects that are due to be announced by Lucasfilm Games and as new details emerge, anticipation will grow.
