The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has been delayed indefinitely. Originally slated to release on January 15, 2021, the upcoming video-game adaptation has now been removed from WB’s release schedule due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. When responding to a fan asking about a possible surprise trailer release on Twitter, one of the film’s producers, Todd Garner, responded by saying that the movie no longer has a release date until movie theaters re-open across America.
Garner later posted an official statement of its delay on his Instagram account, saying, “It should really be saved until people can get out, enjoy it and support it properly.” He also confirmed that reshoots are currently taking place.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat will act as a reboot to the movie franchise, ignoring the continuity of the 1995 film and its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Joining Garner as a producer is Aquaman and The Conjuring director James Wan.
Last month, the upcoming sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot was also delayed indefinitely, as was the video game-inspired movie Free Guy.
