Original ‘Tomb Raider’ Is Getting A Remake 30 Years Later WIth ‘Legacy Of Atlantis’

A remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider was unveiled at The Game Awards in December. Now being produced by Crystal Dynamics and new partner Flying Wild Hog, this new game will be titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

A press release for the game describes:

“Developed in partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the game features stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, modern game design, and new surprises that honor the spirit and atmosphere of the original game. As Lara Croft, players will harness their wits and athleticism to explore exotic locations lost to time, traverse treacherous landscapes, solve deadly contraptions, and face lethal predators in their quest for the scattered pieces of the Scion – an artifact of immeasurable power.”

The Tomb Raider franchise got a modern reboot in the 2010s with the prequel “Survivor Trilogy”, which comprised 2013’s Tomb Raider, 2016’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Camilla Luddington voiced Lara Croft during this era, and she will now be passing the torch to Alix Wilton Regan for this new age of Tomb Raider. Regan is known for her work in Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Lies of P.

In the announcement trailer, Regan as Croft narrates:

“It’s been years, but the events are still etched in my memory – lost worlds frozen in time, new discoveries waiting behind every door, across every chasm. I didn’t know then the path this adventure would send me on. But it was a fire that still burns. I need to see more. I need to go further to uncover the secrets of Atlantis. Some legends are destined to be retold.”

We are shown all the familiar terrains of the original Tomb Raider adventure, now with breathtaking graphics forged by Unreal Engine 5. It is a treat to see Lara Croft in her classic attire: a teal tank top, shorts, a backpack, combat boots and fingerless gloves. The trailer also gave us a glimpse of the dinosaurs Lara faces off against, with all the glory of modern visuals.

The trailer ends with a title card announcing “Coming 2026.”

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be available for the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Steam in 2026. A subsequent game in this new saga was announced for 2027, titled, Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
