PlayStation 5 Won’t Be Backwards Compatible With PS1 – PS3 Games

Last week, Sony had confirmed that about 99% of PS4 games would be backwards compatible with the PS5, along with selected games receiving updates for the next-gen system. This news comes only a few days after Sony unveiled the price and release date of PS5. However, if you were expecting to play some PlayStation 1, 2 or 3 games from the system, we have some bad news for you. In an interview with the Japanese website Famitsu, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the PS5 wouldn’t be backwards compatible with any game from PS1 – PS3 eras of gaming.

Ryan said that the reason for this is to focus on the next generation of consoles. “We have been building devices with a focus on PS5-specific engineering,” said Ryan. “Among them, PS4 already has 100 million players, so I thought that I would like to play PS4 titles on PS5 as well, so I introduced PS4 compatibility. While achieving that, we focused on incorporating high-speed SSDs and the new controller ‘DualSense’ in parallel. So, unfortunately, compatibility with them has not been achieved.” The news came shortly after a support post from Ubisoft stating the same information.

The PlayStation 5 is currently on track to release on November 12.
