With most people staying at home and social distanced, you’d think that AR mobile games that were made to be played outside wouldn’t be very successful amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. But, here comes the AR hit game of 2016 to prove that theory wrong. In a report from Sensortower, Pokemon GO has had its most profitable year, earning a net total of over $1 billion.
Within 10 months, Pokemon GO has already outdone its previous year’s growth, which was $902 million in 2019. “Players worldwide have spent up 11 percent more so far this year than in all of last year, and 30 percent more than in the first 10 months of 2019,” claimed Sensortower.
During the pandemic, Niantic Games has made several changes to accommodate the various stay-at-home orders and state shutdowns that occurred throughout the world. Sensortower said that Pokemon GO was “the No. 3 mobile game by global player spending outside of third-party stores, such as those in China.” The only other titles that outgrossed Pokemon GO were PUBG Mobile and Honor of King.
To date, Pokemon GO has earned a total of $4.2 billion globally, with most profits coming from the U.S., with a total of $1.5 billion, followed by Japan with $1.3 billion, with Germany coming in third with $238.6 million.
