Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel (Warner Bros./DC Comics)
CD Projekt Red’s Witcher video game series, and the Witcher novels, are getting a Netflix TV special, starring Henry Cavill (Justice League, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Man of Steel) as Geralt, the main character. Anya Cholatra (The ABC Murderers) will portray Yennefer and Freya Allan (Bluebird) will play Ciri. There hasn’t been any official footage released yet, but Netflix released a few promo pictures, hopefully implying a trailer is forthcoming.
Cavill can be seen in a Netflix promo picture with him facing the horizon, with just one sword. If you’re used to playing The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, you’d expect to see him with two swords. In the novels, he keeps his sword sheathe on his horses’ saddle.
The fantasy series will be a new binge-able series adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels it seems like. It’s unknown what they might take from the video games, but there are multiple novels that contain immense lore with magic, different creatures and warriors.
Sapkowski finished his first Witcher novel in 1986, with the fame just now hitting in the last decade when the video game was released. The game has brought those who loved the lore into the novels, and now the Superman actor will play Geralt on a Netflix series. Give me a never-ending show.
According to IGN, the filming for the show has completed, but there’s a dearth of information about the show’s first season, including how many episodes they filmed and how many seasons they will be doing. San Diego Comic Con will commence on July 19 and Netflix will participate in it, so let’s all cross our fingers for a trailer and an official release date.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch, but will lack a few graphical elements to accommodate the system’s weaker hardware.
The Witcher will be aired sometime next fall in 2020, with no official release date put up yet.
