Suda 51 & Swery Are Working Together To Make Indie Horror Title, Codename ‘Hotel Barcelona’

IGN Japan hosted a livestream for Travis Monday Nightro 2, which looked like an excuse to reveal that No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda, better known as Suda51, and Deadly Premonition creator Hidetaka Suehiro, better known as Swery, are collaborating to make a game together. They revealed it in only a way those two know how.

The pair of eccentric game developers revealed that they’ve been meeting since 2018 to discuss working on a game together, but they always end up getting too drunk to remember what was said so the livestream is a way for them to capture video evidence of their discussion. That didn’t stop the presence of alcohol on the stream, but at least they wouldn’t lose their thoughts later on.

The game in question is an indie horror game codenamed Hotel Barcelona, which Suda51 came up with half an hour before the stream began because he’d like the game to take you to the Spanish city. He later backtracked, though, saying Hotel Barcelona could take place in Tokyo, South Africa or Venezuela.

It’s inspred by the 2004 indie game Siren, David Lynch and Season 3 of Twin Peaks were cited by Swery as inspirations because they’re about “suspense, uncertainty, and nervousness.”

They want the game to be “light and easy to play” with Nintendo Switch and mobile mentioned as potential platforms. Discussions have apparently taken place with publisher Devolver Digital, too, which is offering the pair a $1 million budget to make the game. That being said, even they were blindsided by the news in a Twitter post about the duo’s announcement for the game.

While the game is in a very early process, the livestream being more brainstorming ideas for a game, rather than set points to lock down, the developers track records are solid enough to trust something very interesting coming from them in due time.

The full stream is its just two guys who make games having a fun time shooting the breeze with video games being a focus. They even texted Keiichiro Toyama, creator of Siren and Silent Hill, if he would like to help make the game they’re working on.

He accepted the offer.
