The creator of the Tenchu series, Takuma Endo, wants to create a new ninja game. In an interview with Weekly Famitsu, Endo discussed the recent success of the Akiba’s Trip series and the reveal of a new game called Labyrinth of Zangetsu that will arrive in Japan this summer. Additionally, Endo spoke about the recent trademark that his company, Acquire, had registered, “Stealth Assassin’s.” While some thought it was hinting at a possible revival of the Tenchu series, Endo said that Acquire had bought the trademark because it was available, nothing more.
However, Endo later said that he wants to “recreate a stealth ninja game from the ground up for the PS5 generation.” Twinfinite added an editor’s note saying that the quote is not hinting at a revival for the Tenchu franchise, as FromSoftware, the team behind the Dark Souls franchise, owns the rights to the IP. Interestingly, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice originally started as a new installment to the Tenchu franchise but was spun-off into something completely different.
While games like Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima have drawn inspiration from Tenchu, the series hasn’t seen a new installment since 2009’s Tenchu: Shadow Assassins for the PSP and the Nintendo Wii.
