Sony recently dropped, and then shortly deleted a Playstation 5 advertisement. The ad was joyful and lighthearted, portraying a father playing God of War. The problem with the advertisement was the fact that the Playstation 5 was upside down.

This caused Sony to delete the ad on July 8, which was the same day it was posted. This occurred after a flurry of Twitter users pointed out and criticized this error.

“Upside-down PS5, basically sums up Sony’s current handling of their PlayStation brand from hardware distributions to game releases and legacy software. Embarrassing.”

In the video, the Playstation 5 has its disc drive on the top despite the fact that it should be on the bottom. This would not have any major effect on the system but would require players to insert game discs in an inverted manner. It is understandable for Sony to remove the ad, however, it may make them seem out of touch with their product.

This is not the first time Sony has shown an improperly positioned PS5 in media content. As Kotaku observed previously, Playstation Studios head Herman Hulst made a similar error in December of 2020. Hulst’s video showed his cat scratching his TV while he played PS5-title Bugsnax. The video, however, revealed an upside-down PS5 with the disc drive on top. The tweet was then deleted and reposted with the console cropped out.

Matt Peters (@mightyinkMatt on Twitter) also brought up a retro Nintendo ad that featured a powered-off NES with no cartridge. Video game console advertisements seem to struggle with setting up the system correctly.
