‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ Controllers Aren’t Even Shipping Yet – Scalpers Are Already Doubling the Price

Sony opened preorders for its limited-edition Grand Theft Auto 6 DualSense controllers this week, and it took almost no time at all for the resale market to catch up — and then blow straight past retail pricing before a single unit has actually shipped.
The controllers themselves are built to cash in on GTA 6 hype directly, with design touches that nod to the game’s Vice City setting: a shimmering, color-shifting finish on one variant and palm tree details molded straight into the controller body. Sony released two versions, white and black, both priced at $84.99 MSRP. The white variant sold out almost instantly. The black version is still available to preorder through PlayStation Direct, at least for now. Both are scheduled to ship November 19, 2026 — the same day GTA 6 itself finally launches, after years of anticipation and delays that have made it arguably the most hyped video game release in recent memory.
That hype is exactly what scalpers are exploiting. eBay listings for the black controller are averaging around $140, roughly a 65% markup over retail. The sold-out white variant is doing even better for resellers, with listings climbing as high as $200 — more than double the original price. What makes this particular round of scalping notable is the timing: these are presale flips, meaning resellers are charging inflated prices for a product that hasn’t even been manufactured and shipped to them yet, let alone to buyers. That practice runs up against eBay’s own terms of service, which require presale listings to ship within 40 business days — a rule that’s clearly not stopping anyone from listing controllers for a November ship date well in advance.
If this all feels familiar, that’s because it is. Limited-edition gaming hardware has become one of the most reliably exploitable corners of the resale market, and this year alone has offered several previews of exactly this pattern: the 25th-anniversary Xbox Series X drew similar scalping activity, the newly announced Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 special edition sold out and disappeared into resale listings within hours of its own preorder window opening, and Marvel’s Wolverine-themed DualSense controller saw a nearly identical price-doubling frenzy when it launched. The common thread across all of them is simple: pair a beloved franchise with genuinely limited stock, and scalping bots and resellers will move faster than actual fans can click “add to cart.”
For anyone hoping to get a GTA 6 controller at retail price, the practical advice mirrors every other scalped-hardware situation: keep an eye on restocks directly through PlayStation Direct and major retailers rather than searching eBay, where prices are unlikely to come back down to earth before November 19 — and may climb further as the game’s release date gets closer and demand intensifies. Whether Sony or eBay does anything to curb the practice before launch remains an open question, but based on the pattern with every other limited-edition controller this year, the safer bet is that they won’t.
