Overwatch 2 is going back to its roots, becoming just Overwatch again, with Blizzard Entertainment removing the “2” branding. This change is happening alongside the big seasonal update, which introduces five new heroes. Blizzard is trying to reunite with what made the original game click.

There will be key changes to the game teased in the preview. Broader reworks to progression, unlocking new heroes will be forthright, and a closer focus on five‑versus‑five play will feel more like a revamp than a minor update.

“It’s going to upset the balance of the game,” game director Aaron Keller told GameSpot, “but our players do acclimate to change into new heroes fairly quickly.”

Years of mixed opinions on the path Overwatch 2 was taking led to this outcome. Canceled PvE plans and player fatigue ultimately led Blizzard to revert the game players once loved back to 2016.

Instead of stretching heroes across several seasons, Blizzard has decided to drop the five new heroes at once. The lineup has an assortment of tanks for the front line and support classes with hybrid damage, peeling and diving abilities, and will require some changes in how teams are formed and counterplay is developed due to the addition of all the new heroes from Blizzard at once.

Blizzard is aiming to reconnect with what made Overwatch enjoyable in the first place. They are acknowledging their past errors and pitching this as a fresh start. Early reactions from fans are optimistic, with many happy that “OG Overwatch” is making a comeback, while others remain skeptical, waiting to see if this is just a branding move. This is a make-or-break update for Overwatch to build trust with the fanbase.
