‘Apex Legends’ Producer Drew McCoy Says A Sequel Is “Never Gonna” Happen

Apex Legends has enjoyed critical and commercial success, but it’s unlikely to ever receive a direct followup according to producer Drew McCoy. Speaking with USgamer, McCoy explains Respawn Entertainment is thinking about Apex‘s long-term prospects but doesn’t believe a sequel is in its best interest.

“Most people don’t realize how long it takes to make anything, and so a character for us takes about a year and a half to make,” McCoy said. “So we’ve been playing Wattson since early last year, but we have so much stuff in the pipe right now coming that people are always like, ‘So what are you guys gonna do for this or that?’ Like dude, we’re thinking years ahead at this point.”

Apex and other battle royale titles, such as Epic Games’ Fortnite, regularly enjoy updates that add new content or apply balance tweaks. According to McCoy, Respawn believes this is Apex‘s destiny, and providing fans a stream of software updates is how they best believe will keep their game alive.

“We’re never gonna make an Apex 2; hoping next Season 72 is awesome,” the Apex figurehead bluntly said. “That’s kind of where our head is at: how are we setting this up for the long term.” Currently, Season 2 of Apex Legends is slated to start on July 2, and Respawn appears to be teasing something that may await players.
