Ubisoft Won’t Abandon Triple-A Ventures Even With New Free-To-Play Focus

Ubisoft turned heads when they announced last month that their development teams will be slowly turned away from triple-A games and pointed toward a free-to-play model. Ubisoft has since specified that their new ventures will not get in the way of existing and future big-budget triple-A releases.

“Our intention is to deliver a diverse line-up of games that players will love – across all platforms, an Ubisoft spokesperson said during a stockholder earnings call. “We are excited to be investing more in free-to-play experiences, however we want to clarify that this does not mean reducing our AAA offering. Our aim is to continue to deliver premium experiences to players such as Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Riders Republic and Skull & Bones to name a few while also expanding our free-to-play portfolio and strengthening our brands to reach even more players.”

Well, what sane company spokesperson would say anything else? Imagine someone coming on an earning call and saying “hey, we’re gonna put the brakes on those triple-A games for a bit.” Especially talking to investors that would sound ridiculous.
