There wasn’t much drama in the quarterfinals stage of the League of Legends World Championship. There was some sort of tiebreaker game needed in every group during group stage, but no match went to game five in the knockout variant.

Korea’s #2 seed, Griffin, were the favorites coming into a matchup against China’s 3rd seed and reigning champion, Invictus Gaming. However, odds were damned when IG won the first two games of the series, stealing victory from the jaws of defeat in game two when they won off a Baron teamfight when the game was heavily in Griffin’s favor. Griffin showed a bit more fight winning game three, but were ultimately eliminated after getting demolished in the early game of game four. IG won 3-1.

European 2nd seed Fnatic took on Chinese #1 seed FunPlus Phoenix and couldn’t get the job done against the Chinese squad. Despite taking a game from SK Telecom T1 in the group stage, Fnatic couldn’t find that kind of success against FPX. They were easily outmatched in the first two games before taking game three the same way they beat SKT; they utilized a Veigar in the mid lane to dominate the game. The FPX solo laners were just better than Fnatic as they lost game four in convincing fashion. FPX won 3-1.

European 3rd seed Splyce faced #1 Korean seed SK Telecom T1 and it went exactly as expected. The most dominant League team in history took care of business, downing Splyce in four very close games. All four games seemingly could have gone either way but more just ended up in SKT’s favor rather than Splyce’s. Splyce fought hard and well, but could only win one game in the series, being game three. SKT won 3-1.

Finally, Korean 3rd seed DAMWON Gaming took on #1 European seed, G2 Esports. G2 made certain to not let DAMWON solo laners get a lead in any of their games, and that was the difference maker as they took the series that looked poised to be the most competitive of the four sets. It was a great bounceback after a rough group stage ending that had then as the second seed for the knockout stage. DAMWON could only win game two as they were ultimately outdueled by the G2. G2 won 3-1.

The semi-finals will be Invictus Gaming against FunPlus Phoenix on Nov. 2 and SKT Telecom T1 versus G2 Esports on Nov. 3.
