After many years of waiting, things are looking up for the development and eventual release of The Elder Scrolls 6. Here’s a recap of what Bethesda has recently shared with us about the game.

With The Elder Scrolls being some of the most loved and influential role-playing games ever made, it stands to reason that many fans are getting antsy at this point about when the next installment of the series will be released. As it is, the last Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, came out way back in 2011, and Bethesda revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 was in development seven years ago in 2018. At this rate, fans have gotten reasonably annoyed with its delay, but recent developments from Bethesda should bring some hope.

On Feb. 17, Bethesda shared on their website that in participation with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, they will be hosting a Silent Auction in which fans can enter for a chance to create a character that will appear in The Elder Scrolls 6 as an NPC with all of the money made from the raffle going to Make-A-Wish. Not only is this an awesome way to raise money, it also tells us that Bethesda is actively working on finishing up the game. Furthermore, Bethesda has already revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is out of pre-production and that fans can expect the game as early as 2026.

In addition to The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda had their hands tied with their other project that was released in 2023, Starfield, and the two games are created with Creation Engine 2, Bethesda’s own game engine specifically designed for what they do best: huge open-world RPGs. Creation Engine 2 is in part a factor in the delay of the next Elder Scrolls since Bethesda has essentially been building and tweaking the engine as they’ve gone along with developing the game in order to achieve all of the details they want to include in the game.

Of course a lot of what people think about The Elder Scrolls 6 also comes from educated theories based on whatever’s been floating around the internet. For example, based on an old “Happy New Year” Tweet from Bethesda, fans have guessed that The Elder Scrolls 6 will take place in Hammerfall. This is because the image attached to the tweet highlights points on an Elder Scrolls map that hint at the location.

Additionally, some have guessed based on documents from the FTC v. Microsoft case that The Elder Scrolls 6 will exclusively be released on Xbox and PC. This has led fans to wonder if the game will be released on PlayStation at all. However, Bethesda’s executive producer, Todd Howard, has mentioned that he intends to bring The Elder Scrolls 6 to multiple platforms, so there is hope yet.

Not having many definite answers regarding The Elder Scrolls 6 at this point — nearly 14 years post-Skyrim — is no doubt frustrating to many fans, but the good news is that Bethesda is definitely moving things along with the title. The fact that the game could be completed as early as next year means that we can expect to see many confirmed updates very soon.
