In April 2023, Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and TV rights to the popular video game franchise Street Fighter. Initially, Australian YouTube stars-turned-horror filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of the hit A24 film Talk to Me, were attached to the project, but they later dropped out. Japanese-American director Kitao Sakurai has since taken over to direct the upcoming Street Fighter film.
As time goes on, more names from the cast list are being dropped. Street Fighter will feature top names from Aquaman actor Jason Momoa to Grammy winner 50 Cent.
As of now, the Street Fighter cast is Momoa as Blanka, Noah Centineo as Ken, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Joe Anoa’i as Akuma, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, 50 Cent as Balrog, Andrew Schulz as Dan and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison
Mixed Fan Reaction
As the cast is released, fans have shared their opinions on the casting on social media. Under a Reddit post sharing the current cast for the upcoming Street Fighter movie, a user commented, “Completely cringe all around. It’s never too late to cancel the project and put all that money towards a good anime… c’mon Capcom what are you doing?” Another user added, “STOP CASTING FOR THE POSTER, CAST FOR THE STORY.”
Fans continued to express their discontent on X, under a post featuring the cast. An X user commented, “AI was the casting director for this,” while another said, “This is the most fan-cast movie of all time.”
On the other hand, some fans are more receptive to the casting, “I think casting is nice from a marketing perspective. Acting? Meh, but Reacher is a sick grab,” a user stated.
The release date for the upcoming Street Fighter film has not been confirmed, but it’s currently expected to premiere sometime in 2026.
