A new Star Wars Battlefront game may finally be in the works, as a fresh rumor claims Lucasfilm is shopping for a studio to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3, with EA‘s DICE and Destiny developer Bungie reportedly showing interest.

The rumor first appeared in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, in a rumor-mill column written under the pen name “Quarterman,” which is used by the magazine’s editor. Journalist Jeff Grubb, who also contributes to EGM, read parts of the column on his Game Mess Mornings podcast after Issue 265 was sent to Kickstarter backers last week, Bespin Bulletin reported.

According to the column, Disney has big plans for the Battlefront series, and Lucasfilm executives have been aggressively searching for a development partner to create a follow-up to 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront 2. No studio has fully committed yet, but two major developers are said to be circling the project: EA and DICE, the team behind the previous two games and Bungie, the studio behind Halo, Destiny and Marathon, if a deal with DICE doesn’t materialize.

Other industry voices have since fueled the speculation. Longtime content creator Battlefront Updates, who has close ties to EA and DICE, said on X that he had heard the rumors from a reliable source and that “real discussions are happening.” In a follow-up video, he suggested a new Battlefront could come after DICE’s next Battlefield title, stressing that the project is still “very very early.”

Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer, who leads development on Wardogs, also claimed in a post that he had heard both DICE and Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Star Wars Jedi games, are working on Battlefront 3. EA announced in 2021 that Respawn would develop three new Star Wars titles.

None of the companies involved, including EA, DICE, Bungie, Respawn and Lucasfilm, have commented on the reports.

A new entry would capitalize on the remarkable staying power of Battlefront 2, which has seen a resurgence in players years after its launch and was the best-selling Star Wars game last year, according to Bespin Bulletin. Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly has also pointed to Battlefront as an example of a “central” part of the company’s future gaming strategy.

Bungie’s potential involvement may surprise some fans, but the studio has recent experience in a galaxy far, far away. Last year, it partnered with Lucasfilm Games on Renegades, a Star Wars-themed expansion for Destiny 2. The Seattle-based studio has faced mounting pressure following a string of setbacks.

DICE, meanwhile, has been focused on the Battlefield franchise, which rebounded with the launch of Battlefield 6 in October 2025 after Battlefield 2042‘s player base slumped, while Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi team is working on the third and final installment of Cal Kestis’ story.

The Battlefront rumors come as Lucasfilm continues expanding its Star Wars gaming slate, which most recently included Star Wars: Galactic Racer. The arcade racer from Fuse Games launched Oct. 6 and won over critics, becoming the best-reviewed Star Wars game since 2003’s Knights of the Old Republic.
