Beast of Reincarnation, the debut AAA project from Pokémon developer Game Freak, arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC this week, bringing with it a combat system that early guides say hinges almost entirely on precise, well-timed parries.

The single-player action RPG drops players into a post-apocalyptic version of Japan, following protagonist Emma and her canine companion Koo as they fight through corrupted creatures while unraveling the story behind the title’s namesake beast. Published by Fictions, the game launches August 4 and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from its first day, alongside standard purchase options on PC via Steam.

Early tips circulating from outlets covering the game’s combat systems emphasize that success depends heavily on mastering parry timing — players are advised to watch for the start of an enemy’s attacking swing and press the parry input just as the motion begins, rather than reacting to the strike itself. Successful parries and Koo’s abilities both build toward an enemy’s “Down Gauge,” a stagger meter that, once filled, opens a window for an instant Lethal kill.

The game’s opening areas reportedly include respawning and lower-threat enemies specifically suited for players to practice parry timing before facing tougher encounters.

Beyond basic parrying, guides point to two distinct skill systems tied to the game’s two playable characters: Emma’s Blade Arts, which draw from a gauge that fills through successful parries and can deal outsized damage in a fight, and Koo’s Bloom Arts, a separate skill set that slows gameplay to a near-standstill when accessed, allowing for more deliberate tactical decisions mid-encounter. Early coverage also recommends prioritizing unlockable combination attacks over standard strikes when spending skill points, given the larger damage payoff those combos offer compared to basic moves.

For players approaching the game’s boss encounters, multiple guides flag a practical warning: most major fights are preceded by a nearby campsite where players can save progress and apply upgrades, but those campsites aren’t always in obvious locations. The recommendation circulating among early players is straightforward — if a large boss creature appears in a clearing, search the surrounding area for a campsite before engaging rather than risking a fight without a recent save point nearby.
