‘Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity’ Announced

While 2020 may be Mario’s 35th anniversary, that doesn’t mean Nintendo can’t show any love for its other franchises. Just this morning, Nintendo made a surprise announcement for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Presented by Zelda producer, Eiji Aonuma, the upcoming spin-off of the Legend of Zelda franchise won’t be a direct sequel to Hyrule Warriors released on the Wii U. Instead, it will instead be a prequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild.

Taking place 100 years before Breath of the Wild, the game will cover the entire Great Calamity war and the Fall of the Hyrule Kingdom, which were alluded to in Breath of the Wild and its DLC.

Along with the same core-gameplay of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will also include more environmental puzzles and the Sheikah Slate. The Four Champions of Hyrule (Daruk, Mipha, Revali and Urbosa) will join Link and Zelda as playable characters, rather than functioning as NPC’s like in Breath of the Wild. The game will also be re-using much of the same art assets from Breath of the Wild. Alongside the game’s release, Nintendo will be re-releasing the Four Champion Amiibo’s.

While many are still waiting for information for Breath of the Wild 2, Aonuma assured fans that the developers are working hard on the sequel, and they’ll have to wait a little while longer for new updates.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be released on November 20. The previous Hyrule Warriors game is currently available on Nintendo Switch, along with Breath of the Wild.
