Nintendo Direct News: ‘Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD’ Coming To Nintendo Switch

In a surprise announcement near the end of Wednesday night’s Nintendo Direct, Legend of Zelda Series Director Aonuma Eiji showed off a new Zelda game, but not the one everyone was expecting. Aonuma explained that fans will have to wait a little longer to learn more about the hotly-anticipated sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Fans didn’t leave Wednesday’s show empty-handed though. Aonuma then announced that the Wii-classic The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is coming with an HD update to the Nintendo Switch.

Now ten years after its initial release, Skyward Sword was miles off fan’s radar before Wednesday’s announcement. Similar to the revival of other Wii-era classics like Super Mario Galaxy for the Switch, players can use Joycon remotes to simulate the ‘Wiimote’ and ‘Nunchuk’ of days past. For those playing on Switch Lite consoles who can’t detach Joycons, Aonuma demonstrated the the right stick on the Switch console, or pro-controller assumedly, can be used to simulate waving a Joycon.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will hit store shelves and the Nintendo eShop on July 16. Aonuma also announced a snazzy two-Joycon set stylized like the Master Sword and Hylian shield of Zelda-fame coming out on the same day.
