Capcom’s 2023 reimagining of Resident Evil 4 has cemented itself as the best-performing remake of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S era, according to fresh sales analysis from market research firm Alinea, which pegs the game’s lifetime sales at roughly 16.8 million units.

Alinea’s tracking window spans from the consoles’ November 2020 launch through today, and within that stretch, no other rebuilt classic has come close to matching Resident Evil 4‘s numbers. PlayStation accounts for the largest slice of sales at 7.4 million copies, with Steam trailing closely behind at 6.8 million and Xbox bringing up the rear with 1.6 million.

Altogether, the title has pulled in an estimated $560 million in gross revenue for Capcom, with PlayStation again leading at 53.1% of that total, Steam contributing 34.1%, and Xbox rounding things out at 12.8%.

The revenue split reveals an interesting wrinkle tied to Steam’s pricing model. Because the platform leans on regional pricing and frequent seasonal discounts — practices console storefronts have historically been slower to adopt — it tends to generate comparatively less money per unit sold even as it moves a large volume of copies. That dynamic helps explain why markets like China, Brazil and Russia rank among the game’s top-selling territories.

It also shows up in the numbers over time: Steam represented just 28% of revenue on launch day, but that share has since climbed to 34.1%, reflecting a long sales tail fueled by regular markdowns that console platforms with steeper retail pricing haven’t been able to replicate.

No other remake released this generation has come within striking distance of those totals. Ark: Survival Ascended sits in a distant second at roughly 7 million copies, followed by The Last of Us Part I at 6.3 million, Oblivion Remastered at 4.5 million, and the Dead Space remake rounding out the top five at 4.3 million.

Whether Resident Evil 4 keeps its crown remains to be seen, especially with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced already topping 3.5 million copies sold in just its first two weeks on the market — a pace that, if sustained, could make it a serious contender for the title over the next year or two.
