With Star Fox, a modern remake of 1997’s Star Fox 64, releasing this summer, Nintendo is coming out of the gate swinging with a huge update on launch day.

This update will make use of the Nintendo Switch’s next-gen features.

The first addition is a 4-versus-4 Battle Mode, where you can play online and GameShare with friends, as well as with strangers from around the world. Players can be on one of two teams: “Team Star Fox” and “Team Star Wolf.” There is also a choice among three stages, each with a distinct rule set. One will require collecting energy crystals on Fichina, another will see players gather cargo from space pirates on Sector Y, and the last will feature securing control of a designated zone on Corneria. Users can also play offline with CPUs.

The second addition will be a “Role-Playing Filter” in GameChat. If players connect their camera, they can use an Augmented Reality filter to display the faces of characters from the game, such as Fox McCloud or Falco Lombardi. The interactive avatar will be able to follow along with people’s blinks, mouth movements and eyebrow expressions.

Star Fox can be pre-ordered now on the Nintendo eShop and in select retailers. Star Fox will be released on June 25, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
