Virtual reality headsets within Sony were first introduced with the PlayStation 4 back in 2016. After the PS5 was confirmed earlier this year, there have been leaks and predictions that Sony will push their VR series into bigger and better things.

Their 2016 series introduced hardware attachments that had players use their console as a full-on Virtual Reality rig. There have been plenty of patent requests Sony is trying to clear for new PSVR equipment. According to Inverse, the PS5 will have VR headset gear available for $250 in the US. Sony has filed for a number of prototypes of the headsets, but details remain limited. The PS5 will have VR-centric specs to it, including head tracking tech. The headset will reportedly have a battery life of five-hours.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the CEO of Sony, Kenichiro Yoshida, says the PS5 will be pushing the envelope for changing the gaming world. The PS5 is for “hardcore gamers who obsess over the latest features” and that it will be “a niche product aimed at serious players.” The report goes on to say that they will be pushing for the older, more mature gamers instead of the younger gamers.

There aren’t many details regarding Xbox’s Project Scarlett, but it’s almost a guarantee the forthcoming Halo: Infinite will be released in a much-anticipated bundle come next year. For the PS5, however, the only highly-anticipated exclusive release Sony has is Naughty Dog’s Last of Us 2, which will most likely be in a bundle together as well.

“I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set,” lead architect Mark Cerny, according to the Wired.
Sony’s new console is set to be officially announced later this year, and is expected to hit the market during the 2020 holiday season.
