Microsoft Bids To Acquire Discord For $10 Billion
The massively popular chat service Discord is in talks with Microsoft discussing a potential $10 billion acquisition. Reports detail that Discord has been quietly reaching out to potential buyers over the past week.
“I know they are in active discussions with a select few parties,” one source told Venturebeat. “The market is in a state where they could command strong double-digit billions of dollars.”
Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Discord has been in a user renaissance where more than just gamers have been using the service. From political outreach teams, class study groups and even municipal governments, Discord has become the speech tool of choice for many Internet users.
When asked for comment, a Discord spokesperson said they decline to speculate on pricing and would not comment on rumors.
While Discord’s affiliation with video game companies has been limited in the past, partnering Microsoft and Discord has the potential to change the dynamic of Discord and gamers. Being that Discord operates independently of game systems, a Microsoft acquisition may lead to integration that gives Xbox users the leg up in the chat service.
