Sunset Overdrive never got a fair shot. The now eight-year-old power-line-grinding adventure game came out exclusively for Xbox One and was unquestionably one of the best reasons to buy the otherwise barren new system. Then, Sunset Overdrive made a surprise splash on PC many years later which is where I finally played the flaming, popping journey for myself. The game’s special brand of chaos is all its own, and as time goes on, Sunset Overdrive has held on to a steadfast cult following. Following several successful PlayStation-partnered game ventures, Insomniac Games, creators of Sunset Overdrive, were recently acquired by Sony. Since the merger, Sunset Overdrive series director Marcus Smith hinted that there may be more to the Sunset story.

“I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game,” Smith said to GQ in an interview.

While Smith obviously isn’t going to botch Sony or Insomniac’s plans for announcing future releases, his interest in the series is certainly promising. Insomniac has hosted some of the most spectacular games on the PlayStation during this past console generation and with bulked up funding from Sony, a potential Sunset Overdrive 2 would likely be a serious system-seller game for the PlayStation 5.
