Director Christophe Gans is returning to the Silent Hill franchise 20 years after his first trip to the cursed town. The horror film premiered in theaters on January 23. Despite his long history with the series, he received death threats from extreme fans over his bringing the game to the big screen.

Gans directed the first Silent Hill movie, which was criticized upon release but later gained traction among a generation of millennial gamers. Inspired by Silent Hill 2, one of the franchise’s most respected games, Gans faced the challenge of adapting it for the big screen.

Many fans showed gratitude toward Gans, but not all of them.

A small minority of very passionate fans warned him. According to Variety, the fans said, “If you mess up this one, we are going to find you.” A threat like this exemplifies just how erratic fans can be around a beloved game. Although this doesn’t represent the entire Silent Hill fanbase, it still adds significant pressure when making films.

The pressure of making a film that entertains both passionate players of the game and viewers who have never touched a controller is tough. Gans told Variety that, “sometimes, what was difficult was to make people who are not players understand why some elements were so important. Sometimes I had to fight because the fans would be pleased.” He has called the series a form of “modern art” that deserves the most serious treatment.

Even after the threats and mixed reviews, Gans says that he will continue to work on the franchise if given the opportunity.

For the fans who still view his first film, Silent Hill, as a masterpiece, he believes that the rewards outweigh the risks. For Gans, returning to Silent Hill is not just about adapting a game, but about respecting the emotional connection it has to the fans.
