After roughly ten years of chipping away at it, solo developer CryZENx has closed the book on their ambitious Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, capping things off by handing the whole project to the public at no cost.

In a farewell message posted to Patreon, the creator called it “the end of an era,” reflecting on a journey that began without any expectation of an audience. “I never expected a community like this to build around my work,” they wrote, crediting supporters’ feedback and enthusiasm for keeping the late nights of rendering and debugging worthwhile. As a parting gift, CryZENx unlocked the finished build for everyone rather than limiting it to paying backers.

What’s on offer is substantial: more than five hours of playable content spanning every zone the developer had reworked over the years, complete with combat, puzzle-solving and full exploration rather than just a visual showcase. The 60 frames-per-second mode, once reserved exclusively for Patreon subscribers, has also been opened up to all players as one final act of goodwill.

The shutdown wasn’t entirely voluntary, in a sense. Sustaining a passion project of this scale alone clearly wore on the developer over the years, but timing also played a role — Nintendo itself is preparing an official remake of Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, and continuing to build an unlicensed Unreal Engine version in parallel would have made the fan project an increasingly obvious target for legal action.

Details on Nintendo’s version remain sparse. A release window sometime later this year has been confirmed, though no firm date exists yet. Leaks point to physical copies retailing around $60, a price point that’s stirred some concern among fans that the remake may be a lighter overhaul than hoped. There’s also chatter that Nintendo could split the story into two separate releases, one built around young Link and another centered on his adult counterpart. The only footage shown publicly so far — a brief clip of Link asleep in Kakariko Forest with the Triforce of Courage glowing, oddly, before he’d actually earned it in the timeline — has done more to fuel speculation than settle it.

Fans hoping for more clarity may not have to wait long, with Gamescom 2026 approaching and another Nintendo Direct considered a possibility before then. In the meantime, CryZENx’s version remains downloadable for PC.
