‘Ghost Of Tsushima’ Fans Help Raise Funds To Restore Torii At Japanese Shrine

In September, a typhoon hit Japan and toppled a torii, a traditional gate, at Watatsumi Shrine, located on Tsushima Island. On November 27, one of the priests at the shrine launched a Campfire campaign (think of it as the Japanese version of Kickstarter) to restore the torri, according to Famitsu. The campaign targeted five million yen (around USD$48,000), but within 20 days, the campaign has raised four times the original goal, totaling out to over 20,000,000 yen (nearly USD$194800).

Yuichi Hirayama, the campaign organizer, revealed that many of the donations came from fans of Ghost of Tsushima. On the Campfire page, Hirayama wrote an update, saying, “We have received a great deal of support from the players of the Ghost of Tsushima game set in Tsushima, and I feel that it is God’s guidance.” He also wishes that, after the pandemic comes to an end, many will go and visit Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima was released on July 17, 2020.
