CD Projekt RED has finally fed the starving Witcher fans with a first look at The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards 2024.

The Witcher 4 has been in the works for some time already and seeing as the last installment of the franchise, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will be 10 years old next year, the time has finally come for CD Projekt RED to give fans a proper trailer for The Witcher 4. It is a gorgeous cinematic style trailer made with the Unreal Engine 5, and it does a fantastic job of introducing the next chapter of the Witcher franchise without spoiling anything.

First and foremost, it is important to note that The Witcher 4 marks a new saga in the franchise due to the fact that Geralt has been retired as the main character and Ciri, his adoptive daughter, is now taking the reins as the lead. The Witcher 4 will follow Ciri at the beginning of her journey as a witcher. The trailer demonstrates this as she struggles at first in a battle before finding her footing and cleverly wielding her magic abilities and combat skills to her advantage.

The setting of The Witcher 4 will be the Continent as it was previously and will play as a single-player, open-world game. However, based on the trailer and some comments from the team at CD Projekt RED, The Witcher 4 will focus on a more harsh dark-fantasy setting where the consequences of the player’s actions could be more severe. The narrative director of the game, Philipp Weber, noted, “The world of The Witcher 4 is a place full of moral ambiguity… Make your choices, and live with the consequences. Ciri’s story is a battle against destiny. This battle comes at a price that will have to be paid eventually – either by Ciri, or by those dear to her.”

There is still very little known about the actual storyline and gameplay of The Witcher 4 at this time, most likely because the game is not close to being finished at this time. Although this stunning trailer was released recently, there is no projected release date for the game. In fact, the game only entered its “full-scale production phase” earlier this year, so it is unlikely that the game will be released before 2026 (at least). But fear not Witcher fans, with the first trailer out now and looking this stunning, more frequent updates should follow. The game itself will be worth the wait.
