Preorders For Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition Will Begin Later This Month

Our favorite Kyoto-based company is preparing to release the Super NES Classic Edition plug-and-play console, and excited fans are eager to relive some of the 16-bit console’s most acclaimed offerings. Last Tuesday, Nintendo issued a statement regarding when their patrons will be able to begin preordering the upcoming throwback.

While the specific date has yet to be announced, Nintendo’s fans should make a habit of sitting near their computers once the end of the month approaches. Encouragingly, Nintendo seems to be aware of the demand for the miniature Super NES, noting how a “significant amount” of them will grace stores after the initial shipment. However, the wording in Nintendo’s post reinforces the notion that this collectable will be discontinued after the year ends.

And on a related note, if you seemingly preordered the console through Walmart’s website last month, you should check to make sure your order wasn’t cancelled. I received an email informing me that mine was.

The existence of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition, successor to the infamously hard to find NES Classic Edition, was rumored prior to its formal announcement back in June. The package contains 21 built-in titles honoring the cherished console it’s modeled after, including highlights like Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi’s Island. Notably, this is the first instance of the Super Nintendo’s Yoshi’s Island getting re-released instead of the game’s Game Boy Advance rendition.

However, the inclusion of the enigmatic Star Fox 2 is undoubtedly the biggest draw. Given how the Star Fox sequel was never officially released, it’s great that fans will soon be able to experience this lost chapter in Fox McCloud’s history.

Nintendo’s upcoming 16-bit memoriam will launch on September 29 for $79.99. If I can secure one of my own, I promise to review it. In the meantime, at least my Nintendo Switch will keep me company.
