Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie
Paramount Pictures’ live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film has endured a turbulent life thus far; its first trailer accrued a reception so negative that the film was delayed to adjust the mascot’s design. Jim Carrey is playing the role of Sonic’s longtime nemesis Dr. Robotnik in the film, and he’s recently opened up about the controversy for the first time.
Carrey attended the Television Critics Association to represent his Showtime series Kidding, where he was asked about the Sonic film. The actor understands the series carries a storied history and a large fan-base, many of whom adored Sonic since they were children. However, he has reservations about the manner in which the fans have been involved in the development of the movie.
“I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it,” Carrey said. “We’ll see what that entails because sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, ‘I just wanted it, I didn’t care about it. I just jumped on the bandwagon.’ Ownership of anything is going out the window for all of us.”
Sonic‘s new release date is February 14, 2020, or next Valentine’s Day. The blue blur will be voiced by Parks and Recreations alumni Ben Schwartz, while James Marsden of Westworld fame will play his state trooper friend.
