Pokémon Pokopia has sold 2.2 million units in four days, making it the fourth-best-selling title on the console.

This launch came as a surprise to many fans, who were caught off guard after the game was announced only weeks before launch. The life simulation game is co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force, which launched on March 5 on Nintendo Switch 2.

The Ditto in disguise as a human is your player character, and when you begin, you’ll find that the game is very much empty and in disrepair. Your overall mission will be to explore, collect materials, and craft new items to create an environment for you to build upon, which you can then turn into a thriving Pokémon utopia; think of it as Animal Crossing with a focus on Pokémon — a slower-paced life simulation experience focused on exploration and building a Pokémon habitat.

The longer you allow this utopia to develop, the more Pokémon will be drawn to this newly created habitat, thus rewarding those who remain patient and creative. This is a complete departure from the formula used in the traditional RPGs, yet so far the reaction from early gamers has been extremely positive.

The game was envisioned by Shigeru Ohmori, director of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. “When I was working on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, I was continuously looking for new possibilities for Pokémon,” Ohmori told VGC. The partnership with Game Freak and Omega Force adds credibility and experience in the sandbox genre.

Nintendo shares are up 18% with the launch of Pokopia, with investors hoping it drives Switch 2 hardware sales. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC the game is “extremely well made with high production value, deep gameplay, and a strong multiplayer aspect that supports virality.”

The “More Spores for Hoppip” event ran from March 10 to March 25. Players can earn special cotton spores to trade in for picnic-themed furniture, which can be used to attract Skiploom and Jumpluff, which are Pokémon that are exclusive to the event window.

A mystery Ditto rug offer is available to players until January 31, 2027, and requires at least 30 minutes of playtime to unlock the menu.

Pokémon Pokopia is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
