Ah, yes. The inevitable game cycle of life has started in Sega. The gaming monolith plans to delist over 60 of its classic titles like Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Monster World, NiGHTS and Shinobi. Sega has not released any information as to why these games are being delisted come Dec. 6, but if you currently own any of the 60 + titles you should still have access to them.

Hopeful gamers wishing to obtain these Sega titles before they vanish should grab them now. Removal of the games impact Switch, Steam, Xbox and PlayStation users. In the past, Sega has repackaged these classics for resale or classic ports.

Nintendo Switch users can rejoice in the fact that if they own a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription, they’ll have access to “select individual classic titles” as written on Sega’s support site.

The removal of Shinobi is perhaps due to turn the game into a movie. The Golden Axe series removal has to do with the game becoming a TV show, and there is speculation that the game will be repackaged with its newest addition. So far, there’s no release date placed on the new Golden Axe game, leaving fans of the franchise without new information.

But none of this explains why the other titles are being removed.

Sega players on social sites like Reddit have speculated that there will be a re-release of games like Konami’s Castlevania re-release this year. Konami pulled the Castlevania series for resale approximately three months ago, allowing it to be ported over to multiple gaming devices while limiting it to others.

Others guess Sega is done selling their old games and would rather focus on new ones or that Sega is planning a surprise for their followers by releasing new content or a new gaming system similar to Dreamcast, a Sega gaming system released in 1998 that failed to gain traction.

Sega has not released any information as to why the classics are being pulled from stores, but it’s safe to say that more players will opt for emulators in the meantime if they miss the deadlines on these games. Regardless to say, the ball is in Sega’s court and gamers are watching for the next move.
