One of Sega’s long-loved franchises, The House of the Dead, is finally getting a film adaptation. It has just recently been announced that Paul W.S. Anderson will be leading the project as the film’s writer and director.
The upcoming The House of the Dead film will make Anderson’s fourth directed video game-adapted film. He could be considered a genre veteran as he directed the Mortal Kombat film in 1995, nearly 30 years ago. Since then, Anderson has also directed the 2002 Resident Evil film and the more recent Monster Hunter adaptation in 2020. Anderson will also be producing the film with film producer Jeremy Bolt, who has worked with many of his films.
The House of the Dead franchise is one of Sega’s most iconic since it debuted in 1997 as a light gun shooter arcade game. The game is about two agents who battle against an undead army created by the mad scientist Dr. Curien. Since the 1997 game release, Sega has released many other The House of the Dead titles based on the original story and concept. Most recently, the original game was remade in 2022 for current gaming consoles.
In a recent interview, Anderson disclosed that his film will be based on the story from The House of the Dead 3. He states that this game, in particular, grabbed his interest because it “is all about family conflict, amidst the action and scares.” In his own words, Anderson describes the plot of the game as being about “Lisa Rogan, who’s attempting to rescue her father,” and “about Daniel Curien, who’s the son of the man who caused this mutant outbreak in the first place and who has to deal with the sins of the father.”
As a little teaser into what Anderson truly has in store for the direction of this film, he also states that the film will be “a full-on terror ride” and that he wants to stay true to the original immersive aspect of the game by making a film “that mirrors that approach and plays out in real-time, dragging the audience straight into the action.”
