A new competitive Pokémon game is now in development, and it is an absolute dream for long-time fans of the series.

On Feb. 27, the Pokémon Company announced the beginning of development for an upcoming game called Pokémon Champions during the Pokémon Presents stream for Pokémon Day. This game is hyper-focused on competitive battle and will be available to play on mobile devices, the Nintendo Switch, and future Nintendo Switch 2. Game Freak, the developer for the mainline Pokémon games, has been planning the game, and The Pokémon Works is in charge of development.

Pokémon Champions is unlike other games in the franchise because its main focus is on traditional competitive Pokémon battles, which has led many to compare it to Pokémon Stadium. But the major selling point of this game is the fact that players can connect their Pokémon Home to Pokémon Champions and play with any of the Pokémon they have held onto throughout the years. That team that got you through the Elite Four and made you champion in 2012 can once again go for gold.

Though if you choose to use your Pokémon from generations of yore, you may be at a disadvantage since it seems that Mega Evolution from X and Y and Terastalization from Scarlet and Violet are also making a return to the competitive scene in Pokémon Champions. It appears that battle gimmicks from different games will be able to coexist within a single battle as Mega Charizard and a Terastalized Dondozo do battle in the trailer. Gimmicks from other games such as Dynamaxing and Z-Moves are not yet confirmed in Pokémon Champions yet, but, based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s likely they’ll be applicable too.

If you’re new to the Pokémon scene and don’t have a veteran team of Pokémon to pull from, there are sure to be plenty of Pokémon available within Pokémon Champions alone to choose from.
