‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ To Add Mod Support
Baldur’s Gate 3 will get official mod support alongside Patch 7 in September.
Larian Studios announced on X that Patch 7 for Baldur’s Gate 3 would include the official modding toolkit for the game, allowing players to create mods that can be installed hassle-free easily. The patch launches first on PC in September and then on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S soon after. A closed alpha for the toolkit launched on June 3, so a select few modders are already experimenting with the possibilities.
“Coming to you this September, the next major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 will also introduce an officially sanctioned toolkit for giving Lae’zel a mullet. I mean, sure, go for it. You only live once,” Larian Studios said in their patch announcements.
In addition to the closed alpha, registration for a closed beta opens in July, granting the toolkit to approximately 1,000 players. This registration will be open to anyone, not just seasoned modders.
Although this is the first time Baldur’s Gate 3 will have official mod support, the game already has a thriving community of modders making content since the game’s launch last year. Updates to the game, alongside conflicts with third-party programs, sometimes prevent mods from working correctly, but mods developed with this official toolkit will make that a problem of the past. Larian Studios clarified that although they are launching this official toolkit, they will never prevent players from modding the game however they please.
“We will never prevent modding outside of our own official pipeline, but implementing our own will improve compatibility and give us the opportunity to ensure they’ll work wherever you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3,” Larian Studios said in their patch announcements.
Mods created with the toolkit can also be downloaded directly from the console versions of the game. However, the tools themselves will only be available on PC, and there will be some limitations to what mods are available on the console.
“On console, an additional curation process confirms which of these PC mods become available for cross-platform support. While not all PC mods will become available for console, we’ll be sure to publish guidelines to help you understand what kind of content will pass our necessary checks,” Larian Studios said.
Players waiting for official mod support to release can take comfort in knowing that Baldur’s Gate 3 already has unofficial high-quality mods available to download. These mods implement 5E spells from Dungeons and Dragons, add WASD movement, or even mark books as read.
