Chicago Grandma Denyse Holt Rescued From Kidnapper Because Of ‘Wordle’
A Chicago woman was rescued from a kidnapper after her daughter got suspicious that she didn’t send her the answer to the daily Wordle.
Denyse Holt was asleep when James H. Davis III came into her room naked. The intruder forced her to take a bath with him and then had her walk around the house disconnecting phones, before locking her in the basement.
“I was in shock,” Holt told WBBM-TV in Chicago. “I was trying to survive that’s all.”
Holt’s daughter was concerned when her mother didn’t text her the answer to the daily Wordle, a crossword-like game that has players guess a five-letter word, telling the player if they have certain letters right or wrong. The game has taken the world by storm and is updated every day with a new word.
“I didn’t send my older daughter a Wordle in the morning. And that was disconcerting to her,” Holt told the station.
Holt’s daughter called the police and requested a welfare check. What followed was an hours-long standoff that ended with Davis III being taken into custody after he was stunned by police.
He is charged with felony home invasion with a dangerous weapon, aggravated kidnapping while armed with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated assault against a peace officer, according to WBBM. Police believe he was having a mental health breakdown.
Holt was unharmed during the kidnapping.
