The year 2021 marked a huge increase for action-based mobile games as player spending in the genre grew by 69%, according to a report published by Sensor Tower. Players in the United States spent an estimated $966.8 million on the action genre alone in the App Store and on Google Play, increasing by a little over three times compared to the previous year’s spending.

A large factor in the growth was the massive success of Genshin Impact, a free-to-play mobile game that took the internet by storm when it launched in 2020 and has not slowed down since. Genshin Impact accounted for $406.3 million of the total $966.8 million alone.

Genshin Impact made over $2 billion in revenue after its first year on the market.

Overall the report found that mobile spending was up across all genres, but that mobile downloads were down.
