Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the first game released from Sandfall Interactive, a French gaming studio. Trailers depict Belle Epoque France mixed with whimsy and straight-up apocalyptic-level annihilation. The Paintress, the villain in this story, paints a number every year, which turns people of that age to dust. They’re painted out of existence, and this is why expeditions happen. Expedition 33 is setting off to stop her. The numbers are getting lower each year, leaving people with one year left to live the chance to go on an expedition to cross the continent and stop her.

Death nips at your heels in each instance. You, the player, are Gustave and have only your life to give on Expedition 33. You find relics from previous expeditions as you go and even meet up with others from your expedition.

Not only that, but immersive visuals take you through each place. The characters are complex and flawed – but their interactions may just give them away.
