NetEase has made a statement about accidental bans in Marvel Rivals after the game’s extremely successful first month.

Marvel Rivals quickly became one of the top played games on Steam just days after its release peaking at 480,990 concurrent players over its launch weekend on Steam placing itself as the 20th highest concurrent player count ever seen on the platform. This is an astonishing feat, yet perhaps not surprising to gamers who have witnessed first-hand the grip that Marvel Rivals has had on the gaming community since it was released just last month on Dec. 6.

Perhaps because of the game’s sudden and overwhelming popularity fresh out of development, there has been a recent issue with the game in which innocent players were getting flagged and banned for cheating. Some of the players affected by these bans were playing in legal compatibility layer programs which was mistaken for cheating software.

Marvel Rivals developer, NetEase, released a statement via Discord post about this mistake saying “we sincerely apologize for this situation and want to assure you that we do not and will not ban players who are playing fairly and without cheating.” NetEase did not disclose how many players were affected by this mistake, but they assured players that they “have identified the specific reasons behind these false bans and have compiled a list of affected players… We have lifted these bans and want to express our heartfelt apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.”

NetEase went on to say that they take cheating very seriously, and they have “invested significant manpower and resources to improve the speed and accuracy of our detection systems.” They encourage players to report any cheating that they come across in game in order to remove players who are not playing fairly. NetEase ended their statement by informing players that they can appeal to reverse unfair bans. “If you believe you have been wrongly banned, you can appeal to our customer support team, and we will review your case and respond in a timely manner. You can reach the support team via either in-game or in Discord!”

Marvel Rivals Season 1 just released this week, and so far, the issue of unfair bans has not seemed to turn players away from enjoying the game. It seems that NetEase truly has their players’ backs, and Marvel Rivals’s time in the spotlight is far from over.
