Ubisoft Releases Its First NFT-Based Game, ‘Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles’
Ubisoft has released its new blockchain, Web3 game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. A few years ago, when blockchain games were becoming popular, Ubisoft promised its players that they would begin developing one of their own, and so they quietly released Champions Tactics just a few weeks ago.
The game is currently only available on PC via Ubisoft’s website. This has allowed it to escape the need for an ESRB rating since it would need a rating to be sold from other retailers or played on other devices. During its launch, however, Ubisoft did give the game its own age rating, listing it as Adults Only. This is likely due to the nature of the game, in which players utilize NFTs to develop their in-game characters.
The gameplay itself of Champions Tactics is that of a turn-based RPG with a tactical PvP concept. Players collect in-game figurines of warriors from Grimoria – the fictional world the game takes place in – and use them to create teams of three and then to do battle with other players in turn-based combat. These figurines are available to players by purchasing them from other players as NFTs with either cryptocurrency or in-game gold. Players can also create their figurines through the game’s “Forge” option, which requires in-game or cryptocurrency.
Although Champions Tactics is technically free to download, players need both a Ubisoft account and a supported blockchain wallet (cryptocurrency) to play the game. Given in-game currency, a player could play the game without using their crypto or purchasing NFTs. However, it is unlikely that this player would progress very far in the game, seeing as the more powerful characters/figurines will likely be more costly, and the only means of advancing in the game is through PvP combat.
With that said, it appears that a player’s success rate in this game will likely depend on the amount of cryptocurrency they are willing to invest.
