The Total War 25th anniversary showcase teased that a brand new game would be unveiled at The Game Awards. Now, fans around the world know that the new game will be the long-speculated Total War: Warhammer 40,000.
The announcement trailer is mainly cinematic, with keen viewers recognizing David Harbour playing the space marine in the opening shot. Towards the end of the trailer, however, fans are treated to some gameplay footage of rival factions facing off in a city.
The trailer ends with the mantra, “There is no peace amongst the stars.” Due to the new Warcore game engine, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will be available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While no official release date has been announced, the game is available to wishlist now.
The Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Steam page states that players can choose from four distinct factions: Space Marines, Orks, Aeldari and Astra Militarum.
The Space Marines are described as “genetically enhanced weapons of war, these warriors are few in number but near-unmatched in power. Clad in sacred armour and wielding the Imperium’s most deadly weaponry, each strikes with devastating and unyielding precision.”
The Orks are written to be “Brutish hordes of destruction, they are unrelenting, countless and live for war. Storming the battlefield in endless mobs, they brandish unpredictable weapons and clanking war machines – all driven by the primal power of the WAAAGH!”
The Aeldari are notably “An ancient and waning xenos race, who once ruled the stars, but now rail against their certain fate. Swift and elusive, they strike with psychic precision and elegant weaponry, exploiting weakness before vanishing into shadow.”
Finally, the Astra Militarum are classified as “The massed ranks of humanity’s largest fighting force are a bulwark of flesh and steel. Their legions of soldiers march beneath the roar of battle-tanks and the thunder of artillery, grinding enemies into ruin with disciplined fury and sheer determination.”
Steam further elaborates that users will be able to create their own personalized armies, from the name to the sacred colors to their branding and iconography. Players will have unprecedented customization options. The faction’s tactical abilities, signature traits and arcane wargear can also be specifically designed.
There is also great emphasis on the galactic scale of Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Fighting on war-torn planets with unique biomes, battlefield types and dynamic destruction, players will be battling in real-time to determine the fate of entire worlds.
Planets can be captured, fleets upgraded, and a war economy can be amassed to expand empires across the stars. To truly illustrate the sheer scale Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will operate on, Creative Assembly will allow players to bombard worlds from orbit or completely obliterate planets with apocalyptic weaponry.
The announcement trailer puts it best:
“In the grim darkness of the far future, every soul’s survival hangs by a thread. Mankind is beset by endless tides of aliens, traitors and demons. Across countless worlds, battles rage. Lead your armies. Conquer worlds. Fight on as the galaxy burns. For there is no peace amongst the stars – there is only war.”
