As if Mojang doesn’t already put out enough content, the award-winning studio has released a trailer for their newest game that is sure to inpsire both Minecrafters and non-crafters alike. At the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase last week, Mojang Studios premiered the trailer for Minecraft: Legends. The game is only similar to its namesake in aesthetic and setting, as Mojang describes it as a real-time action strategy game.

The gameplay will be different than the platform, sandbox elements of the original Minecraft. According to Mojang Studios Creative Writer Cristina Anderca, Minecraft: Legends, “has strategy elements at its core, but its mechanics are inspired by the immersion of action games. You get to explore the familiar yet in-many-ways-new Overworld in a third-person perspective.”

Mojang Studios is partnering with Vancouver-based gaming studio, Blackbird Interactive, to help bring the game to life. Blackbird is most known for developing games such as Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Crossfire: Legion.

The new third-person perspective implies that there will be some sort of turn-based combat in the game. This is still unclear though, as Anderca says gameplay will still be user-influenced, “You are the center of every battle you lead, fighting alongside your allies while giving them directions.”

As for the story, it seems as if Minecraft: Legends will build on the overarching lore that Minecraft hints at within structures and mobs. According to the games executive producer, Dennis Ries, “In Minecraft Legends, players will discover a gentle land, both familiar and mysterious, full of lush biomes and rich resources. But this beautiful land is on the brink of terrible change – the piglin invasion has begun and threatens to corrupt the Overworld. It´s up to the player to make unexpected friends (including some classic mobs you’ll recognize from Minecraft) to form valuable alliances and lead the way into strategic battles against the fierce invaders from the Nether.”

Ries also confirmed that there will be online campaign co-op and multiplayer features included with the game. Minecraft: Legends has no official release date but the game is slated to release in 2023, with Mojang saying that it will be playable “within a year.”
