Fortnite has launched its all-new chapter two, season eight, titled “Fortnite Cubed,” featuring new map changes, weapons and the return of the beloved Kevin the Cube.
This season starts immediately following the action-packed conclusion of Fortnite’s seventh season, where the alien invasion was avoided, but a bigger threat made itself known. With the alien mothership destroyed the cubes that were hiding inside have been let loose, causing mayhem across the island, and for players.
“The alien and IO war is over, but a new war has taken shape, one where you’re a combatant,” the Fortnite website reads. “After Slone double-crossed you and left you to perish on the Mothership, the cubes that powered it are now free. These things are a bigger threat to the island than those aliens could’ve ever been. They have no face, no speech, but they’re sentient and have six sides of malice.”
The biggest gameplay change is the addition of the “Sideways,” a zone that is filled with cube monsters attempting to attack the player but has a lot of loot as a reward for braving the onslaught. The zone also features low gravity and no building, making it a more combat-focused zone than the rest of the map.
This new season also seems to place emphasis on collaboration, a part of Fortnite that is not usually focused on. Players can now donate bars to construction zones to help decide the future of the island. “With fellow Loopers across the Island, donate the Bars you earn to construction sites where you want to see Turret Stations built up,” the Fortnite website states. “In the future, we’ll need you to come together and decide which new weapons to develop, which ones to unvault, and more.”
Of course, like every new season, this new season features a new battle pass. This new battle pass seems to be attempting to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, featuring many types of original skins from cool to absurd. It also features Marvel’s Carnage as a tie-in character for those who reach level 100 by the end of the season.
Fortnite chapter two, season eight is available now until Dec. 18.
