On July 21, additional information was released regarding the new Iki Island storyline for Ghost of Tsushima. This new storyline will ship with the Director’s Cut of the title when it releases on August 20. A trailer for the Iki Island Story was also released.

Patrick Downs, the senior writer at Sucker Punch Productions, provided an inside look into the new story in a PlayStation Blog post. Downs explains that this expansion will once again feature Jin and will add new locations, characters, story elements and other features.

“Jin’s journey begins when he discovers that a mysterious Mongol tribe has gained a foothold on Iki. They are led by a revered shaman called Ankhsar Khatun, known to her followers as ‘the Eagle.’ As both a khatun and a shaman, she is not only a conqueror of nations, but a shepherd of souls. And the danger she presents to Jin and his people is unlike any they have faced,” writes Downs.

Jin must then make his return to Iki in order to deal with Ankhsar Khatun. “In confronting a new and dangerous enemy, he will be forced to face old fears, and unearth deeply buried traumas,” Downs further explains.

The island of Iki exists in real life but the game’s version features certain fictional aspects according to Downs. “Iki island provides a stark contrast to Tsushima. It is a wild, lawless land of raiders and criminals, scarred by memories of war, and fiercely independent; the samurai have not been in control there for decades,” states the blog post.

“The stories you find on Tsushima are filled with action and adventure. The same is true for Iki Island. In the fight to save Iki, Jin will encounter pirates and smugglers, mad monks, and haunted caves.”

Downs says that this is a story of healing, and provides Jin with a challenge unlike any he has faced before.
