Marvel Studios has recently released an additional trailer for Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. The trailer premiered on June 24 during NBA Countdown on ESPN. The movie is set to release this year on September 3.

The film stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Awkafina also appears as Katy (Shang-Chi’s Friend), while Michelle Yeoh plays the part of Jiang Nan. Ronny Chieng, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang and Florian Munteanu will feature in the film as well. Shang-Chi is regarded as the best martial artist in the Marvel canon.

The trailer begins by emphasizing the historical significance that the ten rings carry for Shang-Chi’s family. The trailer also showcases Shang-Chi’s evil father, Wenwu. Wenwu, played by Tony Leung, is regarded as the “real” Mandarin. The Mandarin serves as the head of the Ten Rings crime organization, using the ten rings to deploy an assortment of magic powers. The father and son duo is shown to have a complicated relationship in the film. This is shown pointedly as the Mandarin says, “I told my men they wouldn’t be able to kill you if they tried…glad I was right.”

This theme of internal and familial struggle has been acknowledged by the director. “Shang-Chi’s main problem in his life is rooted in not knowing who he really is,” Cretton stated previously. “He has to learn how to own every part of himself. If he doesn’t allow himself to look at all of it- the good, the bad, the light, and the dark- and to own it all, he won’t be able to reach his full potential.”

The trailer also gives us a look at intense combat and action scenes along with some of the villains Shang-Chi will face in the upcoming film. We saw Munteanu’s Razor Fist engage in combat with Shang-Chi, along with a massive dragon that lurks underwater. The end of the trailer also gave us a glimpse into Abomination, confirmed from the subtitles of the trailer. Abomination last appeared on screen in the Incredible Hulk.
