Classics continue to be announced ahead of the big E3 convention coming up. This time, its a remaster version of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom. The developers, THQ Nordic is remaking the classic-cult game, they announced via Twitter. The Ps2-era game was released roughly 14 years ago, and THQ Nordic sees a market opportunity as there hasn’t been a Spongebob game created in years for console.

The original game was known for its fun, laid-back, humorous feel. The friendly universe of Spongebob has a popular backing, that has an immense amount of potential to come. This version is a 3D remastering version that has you defending Bikini Bottoms from an onslaught of crazy robots. The original Battle for Bikini Bottom had the player taking control of our usual characters SpongeBob, Patrick and others to help defend their homeland against Plankton. Along with the PS2, the game was released on the original Xbox and the Nintendo Gamecube. Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom won a 2004 Kids’ Choice Award from the company Nickelodeon.

The new trailer doesn’t reveal much, as details are scarce because the teaser is only around 20 seconds long. More footage will surely be released when E3 comes around. The game is being remastered for next-gen consoles such as the Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch, according to the teaser trailer. There will also be a multiplayer mode for the first time, perhaps attacking the Battle Royale genre of gaming with the likes of Fortnite: Battle Royale. The new remastered version will be called Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. The release date has yet to be released as well, with it likely to be announced during E3.

This announcement is the first of three that THQ Nordic plans to be releasing during E3. Their other titles are set to be released Thursday at 2:00 EST, and the third to be announced Friday, June 7th at 2:00 EST.
