DC has posted a brand-new trailer for Blue Beetle.

Xolo Maridueña, who is best known for his role in the Netflix hit show Cobra Kai, steps into the role of reluctant superhero Jamie Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. The trailer showcases multiple aspects of the movie’s central character. This includes the ancient piece of alien biotechnology called the scarab. It comes into the Reyes family’s lives and chooses young Jamie as its next champion.

“The family aspect to this movie and to the character is inherent to the comics and so special,” said Maridueña. “The family we’ve been able to create in the movie — the mom, dad, uncle, sister, grandmother — I feel like that aspect of being a superhero hasn’t been tapped into a ton.”

The adrenaline-filled event is not without its perks for him. This includes the scarab suit’s flight capabilities and protective wings that can slice through a bus-sized “threat” like a knife through warm butter! Most notably, the ability for the suit to create weaponry almost instantly with Reyes’s will. In one shot, the suit materializes arms for Reyes that fire powerful pulses to help fend off heavily armed men.

Along with these action teases with the suit, we get a longer look at the movie’s villain. Raoul Max Trujillo suits up in armor of his own as Conrad Carapax, also known as the Indestructible Man.

In addition, Carapax and Victoria Kord ( Susan Sarandon) serve as potential plot hooks with their connections to earlier versions of Blue Beetle. In the comics, Carapax has a history with the Blue Beetle lies with being a rival of Dan Garrett, who was DC’s first Blue Beetle. Also, Kord is the CEO of Kord Industries and the older sister of Ted Kord, who has also spent time as the Blue Beetle.

Angel Manuel Soto’s movie premieres in theaters on August 18.

Co-stars include Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Belissa Escobedo, Bruna Marquezine and comedy legend George Lopez as Jamie’s uncle Rudy.
