Playstation Senior Specialist and Content Communications, Gillen McAllister, sat down with Gotham Knights‘ Creative Director, Patrick Redding, to discuss the upcoming game, including character differences, the open-world and the reimagining of iconic Batman villains in a blog post on the official PlayStation website.

“Red Hood is a brutal brawler with a focus on gunplay. Nightwing’s acrobatics lead to a more exaggerated style of fighting, while the current Robin favors stealth and is a dab hand at using status effects to disrupt enemies,” Redding said. “And Batgirl? She combines a laser-focused, targeted, and efficient melee fighter approach with a lot of resilience and the ability to weaponize her environment using hacking.”

Each character will have their own progression tree, as well as gear and equipment specific for that character. Redding also promised new takes on the various Rogue’s Gallery, particularly the Court of Owls and Mr. Freeze.

On the subject of Gotham City, the game will include numerous locations and easter eggs from the comics. Unlike the Arkham games, Gotham will have a mixture of Citizens, Criminal Factions and the GCPD interacting with the city, making Gotham a much more believable world.

You’ll be allowed to explore the city via grappling hooks and the various vehicles that Batman has left his young co-workers, including a couple of Bat-Cycles. A new gameplay feature on Gotham Knights are Villain Crimes, which are “a series of encounters where the player has to do a certain amount of legwork and detective work to hunt down the villain at the next major confrontation.”

Gotham Knights is currently set for release sometime in 2021. A trailer and gameplay footage was released during DC Fandome.
