PS5 Expected To Outsell Xbox Series X By Two To One In 2022

An industry analyst has predicted that Sony will sell twice the amount of consoles that Microsoft will in 2022.

Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry specialist, predicted that the PlayStation 5 will sell about 18 million units throughout the course of 2022, while the Xbox Series X will sell about 9 million units. This still wouldn’t put Sony on top, however, because Nintendo is expected to sell 21 million units of its Nintendo Switch consoles.

These numbers would line up with what we know so far, as Sony is estimated to have sold about twice the amount of consoles that Microsoft has sold so far, but with Microsoft’s recent acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, it is possible we might see the tide shift later in the console generation.

Even the best estimates give Sony little chance of beating out Nintendo, whose hybrid Nintendo Switch system has continued to be a best-seller every year since its launch in 2017.

Harding-Rolls also expects more consoles to be available across the board, which is good news for gamers who still haven’t been able to track one down.

“It looks like the availability of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles is going to improve slowly over the year,” Harding-Rolls said. “And our expectation is that Sony will outsell Microsoft two-to-one. But actually the biggest selling console in the market is going to be Nintendo Switch at 21 million units, and that will be driven by demand for the new Nintendo Switch OLED.”
